GATFFEST German Film Night returns on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 for a special evening of cultural exchange and cinematic storytelling. Presented in collaboration with the Embassy of Germany in Jamaica under the leadership of His Excellency Jan Hendrik van Thiel, this year’s staging will take on a more intimate format as an exclusive invite-only event due to limited venue capacity.
The evening will feature a screening of Copper Woman: Afua Cooper, Dub Poet, a compelling film creatively directed and produced by Dr. Wilfried Raussert. The documentary highlights the extraordinary life and work of Dr. Afua Cooper — Jamaican-born Canadian historian, celebrated poet, spoken word icon, author, and scholar.
Through poetry, performance, and personal reflection, the film explores Dr. Cooper’s contributions to literature, Black history, activism, and the preservation of Caribbean cultural identity. Copper Woman: Afua Cooper, Dub Poet is both a celebration of artistic expression and a powerful tribute to the enduring impact of Caribbean voices on the global stage.
As one of GATFFEST’s signature international collaborations, German Film Night continues to foster dialogue through film while strengthening cultural connections between Jamaica and Germany.
Directed by Sarah Malléon, SIRÈNES follows Daniel, a widowed father living in northern Martinique with his 8-year-old daughter, Soraya. A fisherman and restaurant owner, Daniel struggles to support his family amid a severe economic and social crisis affecting his community. His world is disrupted when Soraya becomes determined to summon mermaids using a queen conch shell. While the young girl simply longs for friendship and wonder, Daniel fears her fascination may invite danger into their lives. Blending magical realism with emotional depth, the film offers a moving reflection on resilience, culture, and the power of belief.
