Director: Zayre Ferrer
Genre: Comedy
Step into the vibrant heartbeat of 1980s New York with Bembé, a spirited comedy that celebrates resilience, culture, and the power of community. The film follows a determined Merengue bandleader navigating the bustling Latin music scene without a band to call her own, hustling her way through the city in pursuit of her dreams. Along the way, she discovers that success is never a solo journey. Written and directed by Peabody-nominated filmmaker Zayre Ferrer, the film is deeply inspired by the immigrant communities that helped reshape New York during one of its most transformative eras. A graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts with MFAs in Dramatic Writing and Musical Theatre Writing, Ferrer has written for HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death, created the Netflix original Tijuana, and earned recognition through honors such as the Yip Harburg Lyricist Award and the Visionary Fellowship for Disabled Filmmakers. Through music, humor, and heartfelt storytelling, Bembé becomes both a celebration of Caribbean and Latin culture and a moving tribute to the dreamers who turned struggle into art and community.
