Director: Sihle Hlophe
Genre: Documentary
Dear Sikhonkwane is a deeply moving documentary that honors the life and legacy of one of the pioneering voices in SiSwati literature, S.S. Mahlalela. Through the eyes of someone who loved and admired him dearly, the film explores the remarkable journey of a prolific writer, educator, and cultural custodian who authored, co-authored, and edited more than 40 books in less than two decades. More than a portrait of a literary figure, the documentary becomes a heartfelt love letter to language, heritage, and the enduring power of storytelling. Directed by acclaimed South African filmmaker Sihle Hlophe, the film is both deeply personal and culturally significant. Hlophe, an award-winning director with over 15 years of experience, has earned international recognition through honors such as the SAFTA Award for Best Achievement in Directing, an Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Award, and multiple African Movie Academy Award nominations. Her work has screened at more than 70 film festivals worldwide, and she has participated in prestigious international programs including IDFAcademy, the Hot Docs Blue Ice Group Story Lab, and the Torino Story Lab. Inspired by her own relationship with her grandfather, Dear Sikhonkwane serves as an act of cultural preservation, celebrating the beauty of the SiSwati language while ensuring that Mahlalela’s extraordinary contributions are remembered by generations to come.
