Deeply Darkly Drole is a sharply crafted dark comedy that explores grief, isolation, and the absurdity of emotional survival with biting wit and quiet melancholy. The film follows a middle-aged bachelor living under the same roof as his eccentric former ballet-teacher mother, navigating a life consumed by routine, painting, and sorrow. But when he suddenly discovers that he can cry without shedding tears, he becomes obsessed with preserving what he believes is his remaining emotional potency. As he searches for answers, his journey spirals into an unsettling yet darkly humorous examination of authenticity, dysfunction, and the fragile line between emotional truth and performance.
Written and directed by Iranian filmmaker Mohamad Razazian, the film reflects his distinctive artistic voice shaped by literature, music, and cinema. Though originally trained in Particle Physics, Razazian pursued storytelling despite years of censorship challenges in Iran, writing scripts, plays, novels, and translating works from Beat Generation authors. His minimalist visual style, dry satire, and carefully constructed emotional tension give Deeply Darkly Drole a hauntingly intimate atmosphere, turning the protagonist’s struggle into both a tragic meditation on grief and a strangely touching comedy of sadness.
